Administering Medicine

As a general rule teachers should not be involved in the administering of medicine.

Exceptional Circumstances:

This occurs where a child suffers from a severe medical condition and the parents have requested that a teacher administer medicine in the event of a child suffering an attack while in school.

  • Parents should write to B.O.M. requesting that medicine be administered.
  • The B.O.M. may authorise a teacher to administer the medication.
  • Only with authorisation from the B.O.M. should the teacher administer medicine.
  • The B.O.M. should inform the insurance company.
  • The B.O.M. should get an indemnity from the parents in respect of liability.
  • It should be reinstated that if medication is to be administered we would wish that a parent could do it except in an emergency.
